Antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds that can prevent or slow damage to cells caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules produced as a byproduct of normal metabolism, as well as by exposure to environmental toxins such as cigarette smoke, radiation, and air pollution.

Free radicals can cause damage to cells by stealing electrons from other molecules, which can lead to chain reactions that damage cell membranes, proteins, and DNA. This damage can contribute to various health problems, including cancer, heart disease, and aging.

Antioxidants work by neutralizing free radicals and preventing them from causing further damage. They do this by donating an electron to the free radical, which stabilizes it and stops the chain reaction of damage.

Some common antioxidants include vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, selenium, and flavonoids. These compounds can be found in a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Consuming a diet rich in antioxidants can help protect against oxidative stress and promote overall health.
